China's Figure Skaters Under Probe Following Holding Toy Missile during Competition

ISU officials have launched an investigation after a pair of Chinese ice dancers were seen with what looked like a replica weapon during a grand prix figure skating event.

Television video showed Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing sitting alongside a sizable prop in the form of a rocket labeled “DF-61” while waiting for the judges' results in the “kiss and cry” area on Saturday.

The DF-61 is a recently introduced China-produced land-based intercontinental ballistic missile capable of transporting atomic warheads, that had been displayed during a national ceremony last month.

Officials is aware that an inappropriate soft toy seems to have been among those thrown on to the rink by audience members following a performance at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Cup of China event,” the organization commented in an emailed statement.

The item was subsequently handled by the athletes who had just performed. The ISU apologizes for this occurrence and will investigate further.”

Ren and Xing finished eighth of 10 pairs during the ice dancing competition, with the victory going to the American pair of the United States.
